“So it was abandoned, just like that?”

“Yeah, like I said, they just up and left, and now it’s just a derelict. Cool, right?”

The pair were standing up against an old, rusted fence, peering through the hazy twilight at an old hulk of a building, perched at the very edge of their hometown. It was a ruined edifice that might once have been beautiful; flowing lines and clean surfaces on the exterior now pockmarked with corrosion and stained with decay.

“Wanna go inside?” One turned to the other with a grin on their face, daring their counterpart to cross the threshold.

“Hell yeah I do, c’mon, let’s go!”

They had always been mistaken for siblings despite being completely unrelated; so similar in build, temperament, and attitude that they had just melded into a collective in everyone else’s minds; the Twins. Of course, they could tell themselves apart, but it was always more fun to play around with the expectations of onlookers.

Now, as the sun slowly sank over the horizon, they approached the hulk slowly, cautiously – they had always liked exploring together, but this one felt different. Dangerous. Suddenly the Twins were looking up at the muddy, off-white wall of the structure. They looked at each other, both choosing not to comment on the slightly wide-eyed appearance of the other, and set about their next task: finding a door.

From within, the building presented even more of a dilapidated appearance; old water pooled in stagnant puddles, rusted structures loomed out of the darkness shrouding everything. The Twins, as one, flicked their flashlights on, and set off past what they assumed must have been the reception desk.

“Whaddya think they made here?”

“Dunno, I heard it was some research lab, got shut down for “ethical violations”, whatever that means. Hey, did you…”

A sudden noise silenced their chatter. It sounded almost like a droplet hitting water, but somehow thicker, louder, the echoes reverberating through the passageways. The two looked at each other, then followed the sound in silence.

At the heart of the building, they found the source. Tentatively walking onto a catwalk looking over an enormous space, dimly lit by the twilight seeping in through holes in the ceiling, the Twins looked out on something strange. In a large vat, like an open water tank, lay a pool of what they at first mistook for some sort of solidified mass, but revealed itself to be liquid as a droplet of water fell from the ceiling and crashed into the surface. The sound they had heard before filled the room for an instant, ripples spreading across the fluid for a moment, before it suddenly calmed again.

The surface was again perfectly flat and still, a smooth mirror-like finish – it looked almost like they would be able to walk on it. The Twins looked at each other, then one crouched down at the edge of the catwalk to get a closer look.

“What the hell is this…”

They slowly, tentatively reached out, finger just inches from touching the surface, almost entranced by how smooth and slick it looked, imagining what it might feel like to the touch, when a sudden “Hrrk!” from behind pulled their attention away. They turned, quickly, and their eyes went wide with shock.

It was like thick, slick, viscous, rubbery oil was being poured on their counterpart from overhead; a tendril of a shiny black substance connected their body to the ceiling. It slowly, languidly flowed from the top of their head downwards, obscuring their shocked face and leaving only faint gurgling sounds. As the substance began to flow over their clothing, it dissolved away, leaving a border of bare skin barely visible before it disappeared beneath the tide. The untouched Twin was frozen in place with shock, unable to do anything but watch as it began to coat their not-quite-sibling’s body. The tendril shifted slightly, and revealed what had become of the surfaces behind the rolling front of liquid; a completely smooth, blank, featureless expanse of what they could only identify as rubber, like a mannequin’s head made from a shiny, slick, reflective surface. The features beneath were obscured, the outline of a nose or lips barely identifiable, and where eyes once were, now there was only a flat, blank indent. They barely looked like a person.

As the slick continued to cover their counterpart, covering more and more of their body in that smooth, reflective rubber substance, perfectly coating their skin, the untouched twin began to hear a new sound filling the space. Not just the oozing, wet sounds of the tendril from above, but a faint, unmistakable moan of pleasure. They saw a pair of hands that now more closely resembled a pair of thick, shiny gloves twitch, then slowly start to move, smearing the oil across whatever scraps of bare skin remained, as if desperate to become completely coated in the substance. The oil passed down over writhing hips, dissolved clothing between tensed legs to reveal unmistakable signs of intense, overwhelming arousal, before they were immediately covered up by a smooth, featureless expanse of the bizarre material.

In what felt like the blink of an eye, the tendril tapered off, and the flow stopped. Standing in front of the remaining twin was a perfectly featureless creature, humanoid but unrecognisable, writhing and twitching in place, muffled moans erupting from beneath its not-face. In horror, the unaltered twin watched as the recognisable parts of their counterpart slowly changed – the shoulders shifted position almost imperceptibly, hips changed shape in a way that no one else would have been able to notice. It wasn’t changing to the point that it would match them, but it was closer, somewhere in the middle. The moans faded, and suddenly the thing fell completely still. Then, in an instant, too fast to react, it stepped forward, placed rubbery, smooth hands on the twin’s shoulders, and pushed them back over the edge, tumbling into the slick, rubbery surface below.

They felt the impact of the slick rubber on their back, harder than water yet more inviting, welcoming them deeper, dragging them under. Their clothing was stripped away in dissolving scraps, as the fluid clung to their flesh, every single surface of their body suddenly igniting in pleasure as they were changed. They felt the smooth rubber skin forming over them, felt it wrapping around their head, felt the mask sealing around their face, and then the fluid made it inside their head and they felt nothing at all.

Hours later, two things stood opposite each other in the vast, empty hall of the derelict building, standing over a vat of liquid rubber, silent, still. They had always been mistaken for siblings before, even though they could always tell each other apart – but these creations were different. Their hips set in the exact same way, their legs had the exact same curves, and between their thighs was the exact same bulge of pleasurable nothingness. When the time came for them to receive orders from their new, slick, liquid overlord, the same moans broke from rubber-sealed lips, hidden beneath a featureless, blank expanse.

The Twins had become one.
